HISTORICAL FACT

Interior Of The SmokestackThe smokestack at Island Station is approx. 200 feet tall, 25 feet in diameter, and constructed of riveted 6 gauge cold rolled steel. The stack is also firebrick lined all the way to the top.

 

 

Metal Flooring ID Plate Flooring and stairs in the main structure of Island Station were produced by Irving's Iron Works of New York. Irving's Iron Works opened its doors in New York City in 1902 and its first steel grating products were designed and manufactured in 1912 for use as sidewalk vents for the New York City Subway System. The new flooring product was aptly termed "Subway Grating" and a new industry was born.
